現在、うなぎの寝床さんと提灯照明の開発を進めています。この照明は、八女の宿泊施設「craft inn “te”」のためにデザインしたものが出発点です。シェード部分の製作は、八女提灯のつくり手である伊藤博紀さん（伊藤権次郎商店 8代目）にお願いしています。

デザインの着想は、通常の提灯を上下逆さまにした形状から得ました。当初、製作するにあたっては既存の羽根型をひっくり返して利用していましたが、この方法では通常よりも高い技能が必要となり、つくれる職人が限られてしまいます。より多くの職人がつくれるよう、この照明専用の新しい羽根型を型職人さんに起こしてもらいました。

型の素材には、切削機械やアルミなど金属製のものも選択肢としてありましたが、伊藤さんはあえて手づくりの木型を選びました。「金属は冬の製作時に冷たい。手づくりの提灯には、手づくりの木型の方が気持ちが入る」——八女提灯の仕事は、道具の選択からすでにはじまっています。

八女提灯は、人の手でひとつひとつつくられるものです。生産量をすぐに増やすことは難しく、また、そうすべきでもないと思っています。まずは九州を中心に、コントラクト（物件での利用を前提とした）販売からはじめ、少しずつ届けられる数を増やしていければと考えています。

どの産地・工房でも共通していますが、一人前の職人になるには数年の修行期間が必要です。この照明の製作が、職人を志す方たちの仕事となり、地域の技術と文化の継承につながればと思いながら、ローンチに向けて準備を進めています。

We are currently developing a lantern light in collaboration with Unagino-Nedoko. The design originated from a piece we created for craft inn “te”, an accommodation in Yame.The shades are made by Hiroki Ito, an eighth-generation craftsman at Ito Gonjiro Shoten, one of the leading makers of Yame Lanterns.

The design was inspired by inverting a traditional lantern upside down. In the early stages of production, we worked with existing wing molds turned the other way around — but this approach demanded a higher level of skill than usual, limiting the number of craftspeople who could make it. To open the process up to more hands, we had a new set of wing molds made specifically for this light.

For the molds, options such as CNC-cut or metal molds were available, but Ito-san chose handmade wooden molds. “Metal is cold to the touch in winter. For a handmade lantern, a handmade wooden mold just feels right.” In Yame Lantern craft, the work begins with the choice of tools.

Yame Lanterns are made one by one, by hand. It is not easy to scale up production quickly — nor do we think it should be. We plan to start with contract sales centered on Kyushu, gradually increasing the number we can offer as the work grows.

As with any craft region or workshop, becoming a skilled craftsperson takes years of training. We hope this light becomes part of that journey — a piece of work that supports those who choose this path, and a small contribution to keeping the culture of Yame alive.
