柳川を拠点とする水門メーカー「乗富鉄工所」さんの、新たな拠点整備の設計を進めるため、隔週で柳川に通っています。

写真は敷地裏側の水路。ご存知の通り、柳川は水路のまちです。私たちもこのプロジェクトに関わるにあたり、改めて柳川のことを調べています。まちに張り巡らされた水路網は、総延長にして約930km。福岡から東京までを結ぶほどの長さになります。その水路が、かつて埋め立てられようとしていたことは、あまり知られていないのではないでしょうか。

このまちに、乗富さんだからこそ実現できる場所を、一緒に考えています。

Every other week, I travel to Yanagawa, where we are designing a new base for NORIDOMI IRON　WORKS, a floodgate manufacturer rooted in the city.

The photograph shows the canal running behind the site. As you may know, Yanagawa is a city of waterways. In taking on this project, we have been studying the city anew. The canal network threaded through the town runs to roughly 930 km in total ― long enough to stretch from Fukuoka to Tokyo. Less widely known, perhaps, is that these canals were once slated to be filled in.

Here, together with NORIDOMI, we are thinking through the kind of place that only they could bring into being.
