About

rhythmdesign Ltd.[English translation below.]

An architectural design office “rhythmdesign” is an office where Kenichiro Ide takes the lead in planning, layout, design, and research related to cities and architecture. Since its inception in 2004, it has been operating from the city of Fukuoka, located in southwestern Japan.

As a local design team, it is involved in a variety of projects from private work to public or Japanese-based national brands.

We consistently aim at “placemaking that can be realized only by that place”, and begin designing with the discovery of potential problems and charm by doing interviews, research, or workshops. Also, we always value communication and share information with clients and all those involved in the project, trying to have a constructive discussion.

That is because the historical background and context we should interpret or people’s dreams and thoughts are not within us, but in the surrounding environments and the clients themselves. We interpret the collected information, find out structures in the information, and then put them into the concrete colors and forms called “design”, just like “translation”-the very processes are exactly what we regard as our identity.

Earnestly accumulating the work of “architectonically translating” and “working together and thinking together” enables us to find out the structure in the information, and creates “a new living place”. Thus, the charm of the city will be enhanced. That is our mission.

Architect

Kenichiro Ide
Representative Director|First-class architect
Born in Fukuoka in 1978
After graduating from the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering, Fukuoka University, moved to Europe in 2000
Established “rythmdesign” after returning to Japan in 2004

I was born to a father, who was a carpenter, and a mother whose parents ran an architectural hardware shop. I grew up under the environment where “making” and “thinking” were not differentiated. My father was engaged in from the design of the house to the material processing and the construction all by himself. I felt that my father and his clients had a trusting relationship exceeding that of “the consignor and the trustee”, growing up while yearning for such relation brought about through “creating” experiences.

The design event that started in 2004, just after I became independent, was born from the idea that we want to discuss design beyond all boundaries, genres, generations, gender, professionals, or amateurs. Through these activities that lasted for 10 years, I was convinced and realized that “studying together through sharing processes and experiences” would enable us to create a better design and situations.

The construction philosophy, which has been fostered through the environment where I was born and grew up, or though some design events, forms the foundation of the construction processes: “architectonically translating” and “thinking together and making together”. I will not force an idea from the perspective of planning or designs, but I will interpret the culture, the history, and all the information people have fostered in their region, and then localize, or adapt them to their current ways of life or lifestyles so as to fit in. That is the role of the architect, I believe, and I am considering the construction and building systems for our aim to come true.
