パルコ の平松有吾さんが『渋谷パルコの復活／なぜ危機から再生できたのか？』を出版されました。
本書には、渋谷パルコ が既存建物を改修するのではなく、新築へと踏み切るに至った経緯、そのプロセスで起きた出来事、そして近年、過去最高益を記録するまでに復活を果たした背景がまとめられています。
私たちとパルコの関わりは、2010年に 福岡パルコ がオープンした際、パルコが初めて手がけた自主編集ショップ「ワンス・ア・マンス」 の設計を担当したことが始まりでした。
当時、平松さんから初めて設計を依頼いただいた際、彼はこう話してくれました。
「福岡・天神の中心市街地には、すでに多くの商業施設や百貨店がある。そんな『すでに出来上がっている街』にパルコができる意義は、これまでになかった多様性を持ち込むことだと思っています。」と。
「ワンス・ア・マンス」はその名の通り、月に一度ディレクター陣のセレクトによって大きく商品が入れ替わる、非常にユニークなスタイルのショップでした。その立ち上げを、私たちは傍らで見つめながら、その困難さと同時に、確かな前進を感じていました。そうした経験と確信がのちの渋谷パルコへとつながっていると考えると、逆風のなかで続けた試行錯誤こそが、街に新しい風景をつくっていくのだと思えてきます。

Mr. Yugo Hiramatsu of Parco has published a new book, “The Revival of Shibuya PARCO: How Did It Emerge From Crisis?”
The book gently traces the story behind Shibuya PARCO’s decision to rebuild the facility from the ground up rather than renovate the existing structure, the many events that unfolded along the way, and how the facility eventually made a remarkable comeback—achieving its highest profits in recent years.
Our relationship with Parco began in 2010, when Fukuoka PARCO opened and we were entrusted with the design of “Once・A・Month,” the first self-edited retail concept Parco ever created.
I still remember the words Mr. Hiramatsu shared when he first asked us to work on the project:
“In central Tenjin, there are already many commercial facilities and department stores. For PARCO to appear in a city that is already so ‘complete,’ its meaning lies in bringing a new kind of diversity that has not existed before.”
“Once・A・Month,” true to its name, was a shop where the selected items changed dramatically each month under the direction of its curators—a truly unique and lively format.
Watching the team build the shop, we quietly witnessed both the challenges and the steady sense of progress unfolding before us. Looking back, it feels as though those early efforts and subtle certainties eventually carried forward into today’s Shibuya PARCO.
And when thinking about that journey, one cannot help but feel that it is precisely the patient trial and error through headwinds that creates new landscapes within a city.
